Support our Veterans – “Boots to Suits”

A fellow Realtor sent out this email regarding a new way to support our Military returning to civilian life. After presenting it at our Council Meeting on 8/21/14, our District Deputy Sam Patterson took the proposal to a regional degree ceremony meeting the following Saturday. It was well received:

“Sam Patterson took the opportunity, while at the degree ceremony Saturday, to put the proposed program up for discussion with the KofC State Management team.  It was agreed that the program can be approved for distribution throughout the state of Virginia to KofC councils”.

Please read below for details on the proposal.

Dear Fellow Realtors,

After my beloved husband Joe passed away in early 2013, I have distributed some of his personal items to family members, friends, and caddies.  There are still many suits, sport coats, ties, dress and casual shirts, along with some gently used shoes remaining in his closet.  I have been racking my brain trying to find a good home for the balance of Joe’s items.

I think I have found a good solution to this dilemma by initiating a new program in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, Virginia Wounded Warriors, the Veterans Outreach Program (which is a division of the Virginia Employment Commission) and the Junior League of Richmond.  On August 15, we had our kick-off organizational meeting with all of these agencies participating to implement a new “Boots to Suits” program to assist all Virginia Veterans in need.

This program is designed to assist the Veteran who is transitioning from his/her military life to a new career and now needs the clothing to successfully reach their goals.  Until the introduction of this program, each Veteran was sent to discount retailers or resale shops to PURCHASE a new wardrobe.  Now the Junior League of Richmond has agreed to house this new initiative where our Veterans will be given a voucher from the Veterans Outreach Program to visit either of the Junior League Clothes Rack locations and select several career outfits at NO COST to the Vet.

To best get this program underway and to continue to endow it for many years to come, I need YOUR help!  Checks made payable to the Junior League of Richmond Vet Program are grand, but just as important, I ask you to go into your and your significant other’s closets at home and pull some items that would be well suited for our male and female Vets.  This might include business suiting for both genders as well as casual attire for those working in an environment that may not require a coat, tie, or women’s suiting.

When donations are gathered, you can drop off your items at either of the Junior League Clothes Rack locations and immediately receive a tax receipt.  If that is difficult, you can contact me and I will arrange to pick up your donations and provide you with a tax receipt on the spot.  Our pick-up volunteers will deliver the donation on your behalf.

It is our goal to get this voucher program in full gear for our Vets by Veterans’ Day, November 11, 2014.  That means we have eleven weeks to get our two locations stocked!  Your help is critical to our success.  I hope I can count on you.  No donation will be too small.  Our soldiers in combat say frequently to each other—“GOT YOUR SIX”—this is an insider’s reference to a soldier covering the back of the other.  Please assist me in providing this “FREE’ approach to our very deserving Vets to “cover their backs” with an appropriate new wardrobe.

We are all very excited to initiate this program in Virginia with its exceptional military history and outstanding facilities.  We hope that Virginia’s success will allow the Richmond Junior League in the near future to take this program to the National Association of the Junior Leagues to implement comparable programs across the country.  This would enhance our Veterans’ lives from one coast to the other.  We are all too familiar with the “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan.  My wish is we can take that one step further and boast that “Virginia is for Veterans” too!

The address and contact information for the two convenient Junior League of Richmond Clothes Rack locations are below.  They will be thrilled to see you, or don’t forget our PERSONAL PICKUP option—we will always be available to assist you.

Warmest regards,
