The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond

Ralph H. Graner – president elect of The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond recently spoke to a Catholic business networking group I attend. They assist those of us over 50 years of age, and of all denominations, to get around Richmond, VA. They also provide many more services too.

They are in need of Volunteers and their organization can be viewed at

They are located at: 311 Northside Ave, suite 400, Richmond, VA 23228

Phone: (804) 355-728

They are a Local non-profit that began in 1984; they have no direct religious affiliations, but get support from many; they have 3 full time staff, but are mostly staffed with volunteers; they receive funding through donations, member dues, and the kindness of others; the following information is taken directly from their website.

  • The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond is a non-profit service and education organization for people over 50. It is a warm community of volunteers who recognize that through giving of themselves they receive a profound sense of purpose and meaning in their own lives.
  • Our mission is to enrich the lives of people over 50 and empower them to continue to live meaningful and independent lives.
  • Personal Services – Shepherd’s Center volunteers provide transportation to medical appointments and to grocery stores to those over 60 in our community who, for whatever reason, are unable to drive themselves. Other services such as light handyman help, bookkeeping, and friendly calls and visits are also available. There are no fees for services and membership is not required. Each year, the Center’s volunteers provide more than 1,000 round-trip rides!
  • Education — A wide variety of classes are offered through the Center’s Open University. Classes are held at several different sites in Richmond throughout the fall, winter and spring. Most classes are taught by retired faculty from area institutions of higher learning. All teachers and staff volunteer their time.
  • Volunteer opportunities – The Shepherd’s Center’s programs and services are all carried out by volunteers – people like you! We need your help to get seniors in Richmond to medical appointments and to grocery stores. We need your expertise on our Board and its many committees/teams that plan and carry out the work of the Center.  If you live in the Richmond area and are 50 or better, there is not a more wonderful community that you could become part of!
  • Travel – The Center offers an exciting array of travel opportunities each year, from local vineyard tours to cruises.
  • Become a Member!  Becoming a member is easy.  Send a check for $25, payable to The Shepherd’s Center, to the address below, and write “membership” in the note field.  Make sure to include your name, address, and phone number.  Membership is due every fall, and lasts through the following summer.  Being a member gives you a discount on Open University tuition, as well as a discount on trip prices.  But most important, your membership makes you a part of this caring and vital group of people who do so much to help seniors in the Richmond community.

I hope this is a cause worth of your interest. Please contact me if I can be of assistance – John VanderSyde, Council 5476 (February 5, 2014)
